Praia da Falésia — the best beach near MyGem

Praia da Falésia is the headline act: a six-kilometre sweep of copper cliffs and pale sand, a 15-minute walk (or 5-minute drive) from the apartment. Arrive early for parking and a quiet stretch of beach to yourself. Maria Luísa is the quieter neighbour, tucked between sandstone arches that glow at golden hour. If you have a car for half a day, head west to Benagil and take the small kayak tour into the sea cave — the one on every postcard. Further along, Praia do Carvalho and Praia da Marinha are worth the drive for a picnic lunch on the cliffs.

02

Restaurants we actually go back to

For grilled sardines and octopus rice, ask for a table at Restaurante Ramires in Guia — it claims to have invented the famous piri-piri chicken and has been doing it since 1964. In Olhos de Água itself, A Ruína puts you on the sand with your toes almost in the water and an extraordinary fish counter. For a modern take, Vila Joya (one Michelin star, in Albufeira) is worth a special-occasion lunch. And for the best pastel de nata within walking distance, follow the smell to Padaria do Povo — open from 7 am.

Day trips worth the drive

Head inland to Silves for a morning at the red-sandstone Moorish castle, a coffee in the old town, and a walk along the river. Lagos is an hour west and worth the drive for Ponta da Piedade — the cliffs at sunset are some of the most photographed in Europe. For a slower pace, the village of Alte in the Serra do Caldeirão has waterfalls, cobbled lanes, and a handful of tascas that feel entirely untouched. And if the surf is up, Praia do Amado on the west coast will remind you why the Algarve has become a surfer's quiet secret.
